Help Supply: Getting Healthcare Workers the Support They Need

As the world battles COVID-19, healthcare workers are on the frontlines. But who’s helping those who are leading our recovery?

Help Supply is a new online tool that connects healthcare workers to the volunteer services and support they need to keep up the fight against COVID-19. Faced with long days, back-to-back shifts, and a flood of very sick patients, Help Supply is a way to meet their basic needs: grocery shopping, childcare, and mental health services.

Anyone working in a NYC hospital or EMS as a doctor, nurse, technician, EMT, food service worker, janitor or other support staff is eligible to receive support via Help Supply.

Behind the project are individuals from Work & Co, Adobe, Dropbox, and several medical students. Help Supply was made with the input of doctors, nurses and medical school faculty, and the web application was designed and developed by Work & Co.

Said Caleb Yarian, Associate Partner of Strategy at Work & Co and one of the site’s leaders: “Technology has never been more needed to solve real-world problems, in this case, making sure healthcare workers can get support. Our goal was to make it easy for them to make their needs known — and equally easy for volunteer organizations to connect them with much needed help.”

“The battle against Covid-19 is far from over, and in order for us to do our jobs, we need solutions for the people caring for the sick to take care of themselves and their families,” said Steven McDonald, M.D. and professor of emergency medicine at Columbia University. “It’s great that folks clap every evening at 7 PM to show their support, but it’s hugely powerful to see a group come together to create something useful like this that reduces daily stress and helps keep them going.”
